Honest answer: when to use each

Use Spec Kit if…

You want a disciplined, repeatable way to take a feature from idea to implementation, you work across several different AI coding agents, and you want that process to live in the repo where your team can review it. It is free, open source, and mature — there is no reason not to use it for that job.

Use Brainfile if…

Your problem is not 'how do I build this feature' but 'my AI forgets who I am, what we ruled out, and what I asked for last week.' You want context, a run protocol, a backlog and a directive ledger that load automatically every session — including the sessions that are not feature work.

Use both if…

This is the normal answer. Spec Kit governs the change in flight; Brainfile governs the operator running it. A CLAUDE.md that states your conventions, constraints and prior decisions makes every /speckit.specify better, because the agent is not starting from a blank slate. They sit in the same repo without conflicting.

Per-feature workflow vs. standing operating context

Spec Kit is a workflow: a sequence of commands that turns an intent into a spec, a plan, a task list and code, with a constitution setting the rules of the road. Its artifacts are scoped to the change being made, which is exactly right for governing a build.

Brainfile is a standing layer, not a sequence. It is what your AI reads before you have said anything — your role, your conventions, what has already been decided and ruled out, the protocol it runs work under, and the ledger of everything you have asked for.
